History of the Australian Chinatowns
Two other different groups added to the multicultural
identity of the island: the Afghan camel drivers and the islanders.Despite its name, the first group was not exclusively formed
by Afghans, but it was the name used to designate a larger group from Turkey,
Egypt and various regions of present-day Pakistan, India and Iran. They arrived
in Australia in the early 1840s as the solution to a serious problem faced by
the first settlers: the vast lands yet to be explored were too arid for their
horses brought from Europe. The camels, on the other hand, accustomed to more
arduous climatic conditions, became the perfect animals for that inhospitable
terrain and with them came their owners' recruits.
The second group was composed of the inhabitants of other
neighboring islands in the Pacific, specifically of Melanesia . The islanders
were brought to Australia as labor to work in the gold mines and, especially,
in the sugar plantations as they considered them the most prepared Europeans to
work in them.Neither the Afghan camel drivers nor the Pacific Islanders
were able to avoid the racial conflicts faced by the Chinese population. The
European settlers forcibly tolerated their presence in Australia for reasons of
necessity, but the conflicts in the different populations were part of the
routine of the colonies and soon became a thorny issue that guided a
significant part of the first policies of Australia as Confederate state.
The white Australia
The tensions not only will not cease, but will be further
fueled in the late nineteenth century by new European schools of thought in
defense of the superiority of the white race . Its consequences in the
migration policy are the origin of the so-called white Australia.
The most direct materialization of this policy was the
restriction of immigration. It began to play with the idea of a concrete
immigrant profile: the qualified European. These in turn were the most scarce
due to distance and travel, so that the British Government was forced to
implement an immigration control plan with two parallel policies: restriction
and promotion. Under the first, they begin by restricting the entry of Asian
immigrants, although those who were already there are not expelled. If you want to move see Australian Skilled Immigration Consultant. The
islanders of Melanesia, on the other hand, will have a different kind of luck
and will be deported to their islands in the Pacific. The second part of the
plan will be implemented by a new system of subsidies and incentives: the
benefits offered by the British Government to help those of its citizens who
wish to start a new life on the Australian island increased or decreased
according to the need of hand of work that is required from the Pacific.
